WHAT IS MODEL UNITED NATIONS?

Model United Nations, also known as Model UN or MUN, is a competition where students role play as delegates to the United Nations and convene to come up with resolutions to solve the world's most pressing issues. This takes place at conferences which are held around the world, with many being located in the Bay Area.

Participating in conferences is a multi-step process, and the first thing delegates do is write a position paper that describes the state of the issue they have been assigned, details the related policies of the country they will represent, and proposes a solution to the issue after examining the situation. During the conference itself, delegates will collaborate to come up with a resolution that satisfies the policies of various countries with the hope of getting it passed.

Students can win prizes at the end of each conference based on their performance as delegates, which includes their leadership, public speaking, knowledge, and preparation. More information about Model UN as a whole and suggested research sources can be found here.
